Photography Changes Everything

As a bio-signal & imaging student and a photographer, I have never thing about CT and X-ray are considering as part of photography before. For me, photography has always been an art of documentation and truth. The nature of photography makes it’s a perfect media for documentation. First of all, it is relatively easy to make, unlike painting that requires year of training, almost everyone can make a photography. Moreover, photography is an art form of truth, since it is hard to manipulate the images. As a result, telling the truth is the most powerful part of photography as an art form. With the improvement of technology, taking a photo is not an expansive and hard thing to do. However, the convenience makes taking a good photo a much harder thing to do, because it is harder to stand out.

 Approaches to What?

It is easy to take a photo that looks good, but is hard to make a photo which is meaningful. Within the age of smart phone, billions of photos are made each day, but few of them are actually meaning photos. New Canon 1DX can shoot 14 frames per second, but the new fancy DSLR may not producing the same shoots made by Robert Capa’s old Contax film camera. That’s the challenge for modern photographers is making a photo that will stands out among billions of photos.

What is photography for you?

For me photography is way of life. I love to making photos around me, and document the place I live. We I am taking photos, I do not want too much outside elements influence me, all I want to do is getting the perfect exposure, focus and framing. As a result, I enjoy film photography. Without the LCD screen on the back of the camera, I do not have to worry about what kind of photo I made after pressing the shutter, and just focusing on making the shoots. Moreover, as a photographer, the greatest enjoyment is the first time you see the image that you made. For digital images, you get the enjoyment right after you made the shoots, and sometimes it distracts me from getting the next shoot. However, for film you can save the enjoyment later film is processed, and even one more time after film is scanned or enlarged.

In addition, for me as an engineering student, photography is also a perfect way to push me trying out new things and technologies. Photography is a wide field, there is always a place to explore. Moreover, when I shoot a subject, I will study and communicate with the subject. Therefore, I also learned the environment around me, new technology and people as well.
